Best Public Beaches in Mauritius: Mont Choisy Beach

Definitely on my top 10 list of best public beaches in Mauritius, the long stretch and beautiful beach of Mont Choisy is located in the North of the island.

Why is it one of the best beaches in Mauritius?

It is located in the north of the island, a couple of kilometres out of Grand Baie. It is very easy access by public transport from Grand Baie (you can read about taking the bus in Mauritius, here) and it has a very big car park, in the shade under the filao trees.

This is beach is perfect for so many things. It is long, very very long, something like 1.4km – I think it probably makes it the longest public beach in Mauritius. The sand is fine all along and the lagoon is very big, so the water in generally quiet.

The water is crystal clear and the separated swimming area is really large – it is a perfect place for kids to play, go for a walk, a big swim.

There are no restaurants as such on the beach though and it is a bit far away from a city. A lot of people bring picnics and there are also a few street vendors along the car park. Like this one mostly selling refreshing coconuts, pineapples and other seasonal fruits. There is also the ice cream van that comes several times during the day.

Finally, it is one of my favourites because of the sunsets. We live on the East Coast and have sunrise – it is beautiful as well and very serene, but I do love sunsets, and I know am not the only one! Sunsets on Mont Choisy beach are just beautiful.

Useful information around Mont Choisy Beach

One street goes from Grand Baie to Mont Choisy: There are a few really good stops if you want to bring some drinks/food with you: an absolutely amazing French bakery, Le Fournil – the bread is excellent as all their pastries – they also have salads and sandwiches (all is ready early morning so it’s possible to pick up on the way). Momo’s superstore is one of these small family run grocery stores: they sell anything you need from cold beers, sand toys and food in general – it is located under 1km from the beach. I have marked them all on the map at the end of the post.

Here are 3 of the closest hotels to Mont Choisy Beach:
– 4**** Club Med La Pointe aux Canonniers – all inclusive resort
– 4**** Canonniers Beachcomber Resort and Spa – family resort
– 3*** Mystik Hotel Mont Choisy – a small lifestyle hotel – located on the southern end of the beach, they have a very relaxed restaurant, great for lunch or a snack at the end of the day, as well as a small pool.

  1. Mauritius is very much in my wishlist! My friend went there for her honeymoon and I was just fascinated on how beautiful the little island is! If there are so less number of people in the beach, that’s most definitely my fav beach. I’m someone who loves to spend my evening with my guy in a vast expanse of beach!!! When I plan Mauritius, this would be my to-go beach..
