Getaway to Reunion Island, Piton de Grande Anse – Part 4

After the amazing waterfalls and a little rest, Kiddos 1 and I decided it was time for a little walk! We chose a trail just next to the hotel, so we didn’t really need to drive anywhere.

We started the trail at the beach of Grande Anse, the one just at the feet of the hotel where we were staying.

It’s an easy approx 4km walk up an old volcano: le piton de Grande Anse. ‘Piton’ on Reunion Island is the word used for volcano – so you have a lot of ‘Piton’ around. Piton de Grande Anse is the only spot on the island where you are so close to the water at a little more than 80m height.

Kiddos 1 is always so happy to come with me on small adventures. I guess she is very much like her mother, while Kiddos 2 much prefers to stay at home and just chill out, like the father!

Here, she is running up the trail…

Anyways, one really good thing with kiddos 1 being with me is that she has an eye for details, so even though she is running and jumping everywhere, well she still notices every thing. Like this little fella’, another chameleon – very cute with his googleey eyes! or the small mushrooms growing on a tree trump.

The trail basically goes up on one side of the ‘Piton’ and down the other, and the view are just stunning. The nature is so raw on Reunion Island compared to Mauritius.

Another difference with Mauritius are the satellite islands – we have a lot of small island around bother Mauritius and Rodrigues. Well on Reunion Island there is only one: called ‘Petite Ile’ or Small Island and is the island you can see on the pictures here. It is just 200m long and 32m high. Nothing much happens there, just a few trees and a little safe heaven for a few birds and their nests.

We finished down on the other side walked through a little forest and came back to the beach just in time for another stunning sunset.

We had fun on the rocks, trying to get out to the fisherman.

I don’t think that there is anything I enjoy as much as having this kind of time with my girl. We have big plans of coming back for some real hiking when she is a bit bigger.

Next time I take you through the lava tunnels, probably the most special part of our trip!!
